Dhandapani shared the incident on social media, claiming that the woman had been secretly stealing items without the knowledge of other members of the tour group. The shopkeeper reportedly refused her offer to pay for the stolen items, expressing disappointment over her actions. The shopkeeper allegedly stated that in Japan, where theft is uncommon, the attempt to settle the issue with money after being caught was particularly offensive.

The incident unfolded with the shopkeeper contacting the police, and the tour manager accompanying the woman to a police station. Dhandapani described Japan as a high trust society with low crime rates and strict public discipline. The woman again offered money while at the police station, but the officers were not impressed. The police explained the serious legal consequences of shoplifting and warned her about possible jail time.
