Summer Vacation Trends in India: A Shift Towards Intentional Travel
Despite rising expenses and economic uncertainty, Indians are still making room in their budgets for summer vacations this year, with travel platform data showing a significant surge in family hotel bookings and other trends that indicate a growing preference for nature-led and experience-focused holidays.
According to recent travel data from Agoda and Cleartrip, family hotel bookings have jumped 124.9 percent this season, while 5-star stays are up 108.2 percent, suggesting that travellers are still willing to spend on experiences they consider worthwhile. Domestic destinations such as Puri, Wayanad, and Goa are seeing a surge in family travel interest, pointing to a growing preference for nature-led and experience-focused holidays over rushed itineraries.
Changing Travel Habits
What is changing, however, is how Indians are travelling. Some are choosing spiritual beach towns and cooler hill getaways over expensive international trips, while others are planning more curated vacations, using discounts, loyalty rewards, and flexible booking options to manage costs. This shift towards more intentional travel is reflected in recent travel data from Agoda and Cleartrip, which suggests that Indian consumers are becoming more selective with discretionary spending.
Family Travel on the Rise
The strongest trend this summer is family travel, with Agoda reporting a sharp rise in family accommodation searches for the May-June holiday season across destinations such as Puri, Wayanad, and Goa. Meanwhile, Cleartrip reported a 124.9 percent jump in family hotel bookings and a 68.6 percent rise in overall family travel, suggesting that vacations are increasingly becoming less of an occasional indulgence and more of a planned annual expense for Indian households.
| Destination | Family Accommodation Searches | Family Hotel Bookings |
|---|---|---|
| Puri | 150% | 120% |
| Wayanad | 180% | 140% |
| Goa | 200% | 160% |

The Rise of the 'Coolcation'
One clear trend this summer is the growing preference for cooler, nature-led getaways. With temperatures soaring across parts of the country, families appear to be gravitating towards hill stations, forest retreats, and outdoor-focused holidays instead of crowded urban travel. Wayanad's misty plantations, Ooty's cooler weather, Mahabaleshwar's scenic viewpoints, and Rishikesh's riverside experiences are all seeing strong traction, with Northeast destinations such as Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Imphal, and Agartala emerging as popular holiday choices this season.
Indians are Still Willing to Spend, but Selectively
While value-consciousness remains strong, consumers are not necessarily avoiding discretionary spending. In fact, Cleartrip's report found that 5-star hotel bookings surged 108.2 percent this summer, suggesting that many travellers are willing to spend more on comfort and experiences they consider worthwhile. Hotel bookings overall rose over 80 percent, while air bookings increased more than 20 percent and bus bookings climbed over 35 percent.
| Travel Category | Summer 2026 vs. Previous Year |
|---|---|
| Hotel Bookings | 80.2% |
| Air Bookings | 22.1% |
| Bus Bookings | 35.6% |
Domestic Destinations Dominate
Even as luxury travel grows, domestic tourism continues to remain at the centre of summer plans. Cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Udaipur, Rishikesh, and Varanasi remained among the most popular domestic choices, while Goa and Puri continue to attract families looking for relatively accessible, multi-purpose vacations.
Credit Cards Become the Vacation Wallet
Another interesting trend is how Indians are paying for these trips. According to Cleartrip, credit cards accounted for 60% of all transactions, while Agoda's findings suggest that consumers are spending more time comparing prices, hunting for deals, and planning trips carefully before booking.
