Indian Tourist Alleges Racial Abuse at Thai Restaurant, Calls Authorities
Indian Traveller's Viral Video Sparks Debate on Racism in Thailand
A video shared by an Indian traveller in Thailand has gone viral on social media, sparking a heated debate about racism and the treatment of tourists. The traveller claimed he faced racist remarks during an argument at a restaurant, which soon turned into a wider discussion online about prejudice.
The clip, shared on Instagram by a user identified as @semicolonsandsuitcases, shows a woman hurling abuses at the Indian traveller. The traveller says, "We literally had to call the tourist police to sort this out. For all the people who say Thailand is good and all of that, this is the first time I am experiencing racism in Thailand." The post gained wide attention, with thousands reacting in the comments section.
Reactions to the video were mixed, with some users supporting the traveller while others questioned what happened before the video began. One user said, "Why they have this kind of mentality for India," while another commenter, who identified as Thai, wrote, "As a Thai person, I feel sorry that you faced this situation in my country but don’t let few people to ruin your journey. Please do enjoy the rest of your times with nicer people. By the way, India is one of my fav top 5 countries in the world."

However, many others argued that the clip did not show the full exchange, with some users claiming the traveller may have done something to trigger the confrontation. To clarify the situation, the traveller later uploaded a second video to explain the background of the incident.
In the follow-up video, the traveller explained that the problem started with confusion over a breakfast bill. According to him, staff then called another person to help with translation. The woman asked where he was from, and when he said India, it turned into accusations and generalisations about Indians not wanting to pay. The traveller chose not to argue and instead called the tourist police to handle the situation calmly.
The traveller's follow-up comments shifted the discussion, with many users saying stereotypes based on nationality remain a serious issue. Others pointed out that misunderstandings in busy tourist areas can escalate quickly when language barriers are involved. The traveller also used the moment to speak against prejudice more widely, saying, "I’m from Kashmir and have seen prejudice in India too, but that doesn’t make it right anywhere. Generalising an entire group of people is never justified. People are assuming I must have done something to provoke this, that’s surprising. I am a traveller; my goal is to connect with people, understand cultures, and experience how beautiful the world and its people are. I urge people, if you see racism happening anywhere, speak up."
