Indian Prime Minister's Domestic Tourism Initiative Boosts Staycations and Experiential Travel
India's Hospitality Industry Sees Surge in Domestic Tourism Amid Global Uncertainties
India's hospitality industry is experiencing a strong surge in domestic tourism following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent call to prioritize local travel and rationalize discretionary overseas spending to shield the economy from global geopolitical tensions. Industry leaders say the shift is translating into stronger bookings for luxury staycations, experiential travel, and emerging domestic destinations.
In early May, Modi urged citizens to "explore India first" and support domestic tourism, saying money spent within the country strengthens local economies, creates jobs, and promotes regional development. Hospitality operators and travel companies are reporting increased demand across wellness retreats, wildlife resorts, premium staycations, and culturally immersive experiences, signaling a structural shift in Indian travel behavior.

According to Roseate Hotels & Resorts, domestic luxury travel demand has strengthened significantly in recent months, especially after the PM's appeal, across experiential and wellness-focused properties. CEO Kush Kapoor noted that there has been a noticeable rise in domestic bookings amid disruptions affecting international travel this summer.
The Roseate Ganges in Rishikesh is witnessing strong traction from travelers seeking immersive wellness-led experiences, while curated staycation packages at 'The Roseate New Delhi' and 'Roseate House New Delhi' are also seeing robust demand. This trend extends beyond short-term substitution for overseas holidays and reflects changing consumer priorities.

Industry leaders believe the trend extends beyond short-term substitution for overseas holidays and reflects changing consumer priorities. Gaurav Mudgal, managing director of BlackRock Hotels & Resorts, said travelers are increasingly prioritizing experiences over destinations, particularly in the premium segment.
At Aamaghati Wildlife Resort (Ranthambore), Mudgal observed growing confidence among Indian travelers to spend more on high-quality domestic experiences as hospitality offerings today increasingly match global standards in accommodation, service, and curated experiences. Luxury is now increasingly defined by privacy, wellness, wildlife experiences, personalized service, and cultural immersion rather than extravagance alone.
Regional Tourism Ecosystems Stand to Benefit
Industry observers say the focus on domestic tourism could provide a broader boost to the hospitality and tourism ecosystem, including hotels, homestays, transport operators, and local businesses. Krinal Thaker, head marketing at Evoke Experiences, said travelers are increasingly seeking destination-led storytelling and authentic cultural experiences.
The domestic tourism push can accelerate destination development, deepen community participation, and strengthen regional tourism economies over the coming years, industry executives said. Destinations such as Kashmir, Ladakh, Northeast, Kerala, Rajasthan, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Uttarakhand are witnessing strong demand, with affluent travelers opting for boutique stays, premium resorts, private villas, and glamping experiences over conventional sightseeing-led itineraries.
Investor Takeaway
