Matchmaking Firm Drops Client Over Unrealistic Expectations

A viral social media post by professional matchmaker Oendrilia Kapoor has sparked a heated debate on the challenges of modern arranged matchmaking. Kapoor, founder of The Date Crew, recounted an anecdote in which her company dropped a prospective client whose expectations for a groom were far higher than what she had initially disclosed.

The client, a 28-year-old woman earning around Rs 11 lakh per annum, had initially described her expectations as relatively simple: an educated man from a respectable family with a stable career. However, as the matchmaking process progressed, it became clear that the family had a long list of non-negotiable demands.

According to Kapoor, nearly every profile selected by the woman and her family belonged to men earning more than Rs 1 crore annually. The matchmaking team then directly asked whether a minimum salary of Rs 1 crore was an unstated requirement, to which the woman denied it, explaining instead that she simply felt more attracted to those profiles.

However, when the team asked about the apparent caste preference, Kapoor claimed the client's mother intervened and clarified that the family was specifically looking for a Bengali Brahmin groom because the woman's father was particular about caste considerations.

As a result, Kapoor said the family's actual requirements became clear: a groom aged roughly between 29 and 34, earning more than ₹1 crore a year, belonging to a specific caste group and willing to marry their daughter.

Original ExpectationsActual Requirements
Educated man from a respectable family with a stable careerGroom aged 29-34, earning more than ₹1 crore a year, belonging to Bengali Brahmin caste
No specific income requirementMinimum income of ₹1 crore per annum
No caste preferenceSpecific caste preference (Bengali Brahmin)

Kapoor argued that highly successful professionals tend to quickly identify signs of entitlement, excessive parental involvement, and unrealistic expectations during the matchmaking process. She claimed that her team reached out to the profiles the family preferred but failed to find a single successful match, as the men they contacted were not interested in pursuing a conversation.

The incident has sparked a broader debate online, with users divided over whether the family's expectations were unreasonable or simply reflected the transactional nature of arranged marriages. Some have argued that arranged marriages often function like negotiations between families, and that high-income grooms frequently come with their own expectations regarding wealth, social status, family connections, and lifestyle compatibility.
