Ozempic Enters Indian Market: Entrepreneur Issues Cautionary Note on Weight Loss

Background India is set to experience a surge in demand for Ozempic (semaglutide) as generic versions enter the market, priced as low as Rs 1,290 per month. This development has made the country the first major market to see large-scale generic competition.

Personal Experience Aakanksha Sadekar Chauhan, founder of an AI-powered palliative care service, has shared her experience using Ozempic. After losing 30 kg in eight months, she emphasized that the process was clinical, supervised, and far from effortless.

Clinical Approach Chauhan's decision to use Ozempic was driven by underlying metabolic issues, including insulin resistance and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), rather than cosmetic weight loss. She described the experience as accompanied by side effects such as digestive discomfort, reduced appetite, and unexpected energy fluctuations.

Cautionary Note Chauhan warned that Ozempic does not replace discipline and that treating the drug as a shortcut could backfire. She emphasized that it is an intervention, not magic, and that prospective users should get bloodwork done, consult doctors experienced with GLP-1 therapies, and understand long-term implications.

Impact on Demand The generic launches by Indian drugmakers such as Natco Pharma and Eris Lifesciences are expected to widen access to GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, which were previously considered prohibitively expensive. Chauhan's cautionary note serves as a reminder to prospective users to approach Ozempic with a nuanced understanding of its effects and limitations.

Investor Takeaway

Investors should be cautious of potential health risks associated with weight-loss drugs like Ozempic.
