Babi Steamed Bun: A Rags-to-Riches Success Story

Annual Revenue: 180 million yuan (approximately Rs 2,256 crore) Founder: Liu Huiping, 49 Location: Anhui province, China (also known as the "hometown of dough makers")

Background Liu Huiping, a school dropout from Anhui province, has transformed his life from a struggling entrepreneur to a successful business owner, earning 180 million yuan in annual revenue. Born in a province famous for its dough makers, Liu left school early to reduce financial burdens on his parents. He initially learned furniture making but later developed a passion for making Chinese buns.

Early Struggles In 1998, Liu borrowed 4,000 yuan and opened his first steamed bun shop in Shanghai, but the business failed due to a lack of experience. He then worked multiple small jobs, including selling seafood and killing snakes at markets, before restarting his business in 2001. Liu's initial success was marked by a focus on quality, using good-quality pork and chopping the filling by hand to maintain freshness.

Growth and Expansion Liu's shop, initially called Master Liu's Steamed Bun, was later renamed Babi Steamed Bun in 2001. The brand grew rapidly across Shanghai, and by 2008, Liu had built a factory in the city. In 2020, Babi Food Company was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Challenges and Philanthropy Liu's journey was marked by challenges, including a violent attack in 2004 and a machine accident in 2010 that resulted in the loss of his left thumb. Despite these setbacks, Liu continued to expand his business and is now known for his philanthropic efforts, donating money to support education and poor students. Today, Babi Steamed Bun operates over 5,600 stores across China.
