Indian Business Leader Warns Against Overreliance on Artificial Intelligence in Creative Industries
Artificial Intelligence: A Tool, Not a Replacement
Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) should be viewed as an enabling tool rather than an ultimate authority. In a post on X, Mazumdar-Shaw stressed the importance of maintaining a clear distinction between technology and human intellect, highlighting the potential risks of overdependence on AI.
AI as an Enabler
According to Mazumdar-Shaw, AI has the potential to deliver innovative solutions quickly and at scale. However, she warned against allowing it to erode imagination or independent thinking. This sentiment is echoed by Zoho Founder Sridhar Vembu, who has argued that technologists have a responsibility to ensure AI does not overpower human agency.

Human Agency and AI
Vembu has strongly rejected the comparison made by OpenAI Chief Sam Altman, who compared the resources used to train AI models with those required to raise and educate humans over decades. Vembu emphasized that technology should remain in the background, quietly assisting people rather than directing or defining human existence.
Indian IT Companies and AI
Vembu acknowledged AI's growing practical value, particularly in software development, where AI is already capable of writing high-quality code and enhancing productivity. Indian IT companies, given their close engagement with global clients, are well positioned to translate AI capabilities into real-world applications without losing sight of human priorities.
