India Seeks Equitable Access to Anthropic's Mythos AI Model

India is engaged in bilateral discussions with the US administration to enable domestic companies to access Anthropic's Mythos artificial intelligence model. The Centre is examining ways to access the model while ensuring that India's critical infrastructure is not compromised. According to a senior official involved in the talks, the government is working through logistics to ensure that Indian companies can gain access to the model in an equitable manner.

The discussions with US authorities are taking place alongside separate conversations with Anthropic officials at the company's US headquarters. Anthropic has not responded to queries from The Economic Times until publication. The issue gained public attention after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said at the 26th ET Awards for Corporate Excellence on Saturday that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology was actively engaged on the matter.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology was actively engaged on the matter, and that they were engaging with the US administration, Anthropic, and with the vendors who had been given a chance to test Mythos. She added that the cyber challenge posed by Mythos would be a big one.

Government Action

The government has asked the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), and participants in the financial sector to accelerate protective measures for systems including power grids, telecom networks, and banking channels. Officials are also considering a broader policy response for future launches of similar AI systems by other companies. The government needs to build its capacity as soon as possible, as more companies may launch similar models without advance notice.

Anthropic's latest AI model, Mythos, is described as a tool for identifying and exploiting zero-day software vulnerabilities at speed. The model was tested by 40 companies, most of them based in the US, as part of Anthropic's Project Glasswing. No Indian company was included in that list. Companies that tested Mythos reported that it was capable of finding tens of thousands of vulnerabilities, compared with about 500 identified by Anthropic's earlier Opus 4.6 model.
