Income-tax Notices: A Guide to Verification and Authentication

Receiving an income-tax notice can be a daunting experience, especially when it arrives without warning. With phishers mimicking the layout, tone, and terminology of the income-tax department, verifying the authenticity of these notices is crucial to avoid any unnecessary stress or financial penalties.

Notices that Require Verification

Certain income-tax notices demand prompt and careful examination due to their legal significance. Intimations issued under Section 143 (1) generally point to mismatches in reported income or claimed deductions, while defective return notices under Section 139 (9) highlight errors or missing details in the filed return. Communications related to TDS mismatches, high-value transactions, or AIS discrepancies also need to be reviewed closely for accuracy.

Scrutiny Notices and Reassessment

Scrutiny notices under Section 143 (2) and reassessment notices are more comprehensive and often require professional assessment. These notices typically come with strict deadlines and require immediate attention. Intimations reflecting a tax demand should be promptly verified to avoid additional interest or penalties.

Verifying the Authenticity of a Notice

To ensure that a notice is genuine, taxpayers should exercise caution and follow these steps:

  • Check if the email originates from an official domain such as @incometax.gov.in
  • Confirm that the notice correctly mentions a valid PAN and other personal details
  • Cross-check whether the communication has been received on the registered email ID or mobile number

Validating a Notice through the I-T Portal

Taxpayers can verify the authenticity of a notice by logging into the official e-filing portal and checking the "e-Proceedings" or "View Notices" section. They can enter the Document Identification Number (DIN) in the portal's DIN validation tool to confirm the notice's authenticity.

Understanding DIN

DIN stands for Document Identification Number, a unique 20-digit number generated by a computer system. Every communication, including letters, notices, orders, and other correspondence, issued by any I-T authority includes DIN.

Reviewing Records

Reviewing records like AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS can help confirm whether the discrepancies mentioned in the notice are consistent with the income tax department's data.
