
Government Ministries Receive First-Ever Performance Assessment Reports at Council of Ministers Meeting
Government Evaluates Performance of Ministries on Key Administrative Indicators
The government has conducted a first-of-its-kind evaluation of ministries and departments based on key administrative indicators such as pendency in file clearances, handling of public grievances, and timely responses to Cabinet notes. The exercise was aimed at fostering greater accountability and encouraging faster disposal of files as well as quicker resolution of public grievances.
Cabinet Secretary Presents Rankings
Cabinet Secretary TV Somanathan presented the rankings of ministries during a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 21. The meeting, which lasted for 4.5 hours, was attended by all cabinet ministers, ministers of state (independent charge), and ministers of state.

Ministries Ranked on Key Parameters
Ministries such as consumer affairs, coal, power, and health emerged among the better performers across several assessment parameters. The consumer affairs ministry emerged as the top performer in two categories - grievance resolution and management of challenges arising from the West Asia conflict. The coal ministry received the highest ratings for file disposal and administrative management, while the power and health ministries were also counted among strong performers in the assessment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on reforms, faster governance, ease of living, and the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 during the meeting. He emphasized the importance of quicker decision-making and effective governance, urging ministries to simplify administrative processes and give greater emphasis to reforms. The Prime Minister asked ministers to ensure that all possible steps are taken to provide maximum benefits to people from government welfare programmes.
Ministers Review Performance
After the detailed presentation by the cabinet secretary, several ministers conducted review meetings with their officials to identify issues and work towards resolving them promptly. Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan instructed officials to ensure that farmers and underprivileged people do not face unnecessary hurdles in getting their issues addressed, and stressed that prompt grievance redressal must be the top-most priority.
