Google Secures Pentagon Contract for Classified AI Development Amid Employee Concerns
Google Reaches Agreement with US Defense Department for Classified Military Work
Google has reached an agreement with the US Defense Department to allow its artificial intelligence systems to be used for classified military work. According to a Pentagon official, the deal was signed at 4 p.m. on Monday.
The amended contract between Google and the Pentagon provides the agency with API access, giving it the ability to connect directly with the company's software. However, it does not entail custom work or model development. A spokesperson for Alphabet Inc.'s Google stated that the company had taken a responsible approach to supporting national security by providing API access to its commercial models, including on Google infrastructure, with industry-standard practices and terms.
This move marks a significant new milestone in Google's provision of AI to the Pentagon, following several instances of employees protesting the use of the company's technology for some military uses. On Monday, hundreds of AI researchers sent a letter to Alphabet Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai urging him to refuse to make the company's AI systems available for classified workloads for US defense missions. The letter highlighted concerns that AI systems can centralize power and make mistakes.

This development comes after Google workers protested the company's use of its technology for Project Maven, a Pentagon initiative to use AI to analyze drone footage, in 2018. The protests prompted the company to pledge not to make weapons and other potentially harmful technologies. Google has also dropped out of a $100 million Pentagon prize challenge to create technology for voice-controlled, autonomous drone swarms after an internal ethics review.
The deal also follows a breakdown between the Pentagon and Anthropic PBC earlier this year over the use of AI for military applications. The Pentagon is seeking to eject Anthropic and its Claude AI tool from US defense supply chains and has been casting around for new tech giant AI partners.

Google's AI systems will be used for classified military work, according to the agreement. The company has stated its commitment to the private and public sector consensus that AI should not be used for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry without appropriate human oversight.
