French Pastry Chef Earns ₹22 Lakh Per Wedding Cake, Cites Pride in Recent Indian Commission
Luxury Wedding Cake Takes Center Stage at Indian Wedding
A towering, multi-tier cake inspired by Rajasthani architecture stole the show at a lavish Indian wedding in November, drawing attention away from even the guest appearance of Jennifer Lopez. The wedding, held in Udaipur, marked the union of billionaire heiress Netra Mantena and tech entrepreneur Vamsi Gadiraju, with a reported cost of $6.7 million.
The cake was designed by French celebrity pastry chef Bastien Blanc-Tailleur, known for his bespoke creations that rival Haute Couture in scale, craftsmanship, and price. Blanc-Tailleur's team spent an estimated 3,500 hours on the project, which included five cakes in total, with the main structure running several meters high and decorated with white sugar-paste domes, elephants, and orchids.
| Project Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Main Cake Structure | Several meters high |
| Additional Cakes | 2 for the families, 2 theatrically lowered from the ceiling |
| Total Hours Worked | 3,500 hours |

The Indian commission was among the most demanding projects of Blanc-Tailleur's career, forcing him to source eggs and butter locally at the Udaipur venue for the base of the cake. Despite the logistical challenges, Blanc-Tailleur's team successfully delivered the project to his standards.
Blanc-Tailleur's work is rooted in French pastry traditions dating back to the 1700s, now revived for a rarefied global clientele that includes Middle Eastern royals, wealthy Americans, and European aristocrats. With a full-time staff of just 10, Blanc-Tailleur produces only about 20 to 25 cakes a year, personally attending most weddings.
India has emerged as a key destination for international luxury weddings, with heritage venues like Udaipur combining spectacle, scale, and global star power. For Blanc-Tailleur, the Indian commission stood out not just for its size, but for the cultural translation it required – marrying French pastry technique with Indian architectural motifs.
