Founder's Job Listing Sparks Outrage for Preference for Older, Higher-Income Applicants
Social Capital Recruitment Post Sparks Debate on Unconventional Expectations
Social Capital, a Bengaluru-based startup, has posted a recruitment advertisement for a Head of Growth position, sparking widespread debate online due to its unusual expectations for applicants.
The advertisement, posted on X by Ruchir Jajoo, the founder of Social Capital, outlined a salary package of ₹50 lakh per year for the role. The job description required the candidate to be extremely articulate, cerebral, and possess a "top 1% viral sense". The company was also seeking someone who is enthusiastic about "Tech Twitter", believes LinkedIn is "cringe", has a regular gym routine, and is a "healthy workaholic".
However, one statement in particular became the focus of online discussion: "If you're 27+ and make <2L/month, probably don't apply." This condition was criticized for being ageist and discriminatory towards individuals with lower income levels.
The role involves close collaboration with founders of rapidly expanding technology startups, overseeing major product launches, and managing significant financial resources. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading complex marketing launches, managing budgets north of ₹1 million, and orchestrating company-defining launches.
Social Capital specializes in organizing large-scale product launches designed to generate significant online attention for technology companies. The company has developed a structured approach to product launches, known as a "launch playbook", which has been used by several technology companies, including Deel, Gamma, and Airwallex.
The post attracted responses online, with several users questioning the recruitment criteria, particularly the reference to age and income. However, others defended the founder's approach, arguing that the wording was intended as a way to screen applicants and narrow the candidate pool.
