Burnout in India's Tech Industry: A Cry for Help from a Flipkart Engineer

A recent post on the anonymous work forum Grapevine has shed light on the struggles of burnout and long work hours in India's tech industry. The post, written by a Flipkart software engineer, described being on a "P0 escalation call at 3 am" and feeling mentally exhausted.

The engineer's post listed several unusual late-night purchases made through quick-commerce apps, which they jokingly referred to as a "cry for help". These purchases included three cans of Red Bull, a packet of Eno, and a skipping rope, all ordered in the early hours of the morning. The engineer wondered why quick-commerce apps allowed customers to buy random items so late and expressed concern for their mental state.

Other recent orders mentioned in the post included UNO cards, a single lemon, and toilet cleaner. The engineer described these purchases as a coping habit when "work trauma hits", highlighting the pressure and stress they face in their job.

The post received wide engagement and comments from professionals across companies, including the founder of Grapevine. The founder suggested that quick-commerce apps should allow users to block certain items or restrict usage at specific times, especially for people struggling with impulse buying.

However, reactions were mixed. A verified Flipkart assistant manager advised the engineer to prioritize their health, suggesting that they should consider leaving the company if they feel that their well-being is being compromised. In contrast, a TCS software developer downplayed the situation, arguing that stress was a common occurrence in well-paid jobs and that people often sacrifice personal comfort for career growth.

The Flipkart engineer responded by reiterating that long hours may have become normal in the tech industry, but they are still harmful. They emphasized that their health is "definitely taking a massive hit" and that they are struggling to cope with the pressure and stress of their job.
