Elevator Safety Concerns Raised After Malfunction in Gujarat

On March 3, 2026, a dramatic incident occurred at the Sabarmati building of Sardar Heights, a 14-storey residential tower in Valsad, Gujarat. CCTV footage revealed a man narrowly escaping a lift that suddenly malfunctioned and dropped.

The incident occurred at 7:22:45 am, when the resident entered the lift and pressed the button to go up. Approximately 39 seconds later, the lift doors opened, and the resident started to step out. However, the elevator suddenly moved upward while he was getting out, almost trapping him in the gap between the lift and the floor.

Residents of the building reported hearing a loud crashing noise as the lift fell, prompting several people to rush to the lift area. Fortunately, the resident had exited the lift moments earlier, avoiding potential injury. The incident caused panic and left families living in the building shaken.

Investigation Findings

The lift in question is a high-tech system under the Chief Minister's Housing Scheme. According to Himati Roy, Chairman of the Sabarmati Building, technicians from Omega Elevator Maintenance Company had visited the building just two days earlier to address minor issues with the lift's light and fan. Despite recent maintenance, the lift reportedly operated while the doors were open, indicating a serious failure of built-in safety sensors and interlocking systems.

Response and Reactions

The incident has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many users expressing concerns about elevator safety in India. Some have called for charges to be brought against the lift operator and contractors involved, while others have emphasized the importance of waiting for the lift to come to a full stop and match the level before stepping out.
