Cybercrime Crackdown in UAE: Residents Detained for Sharing Drone Strike Photos
Three residents were detained by local police in Dubai after sharing private photographs of a drone strike that damaged their residential building in the Creek Harbour district last Wednesday. According to Detained in Dubai, the individuals were treated as suspects despite being victims of the attack.
UAE authorities have intensified enforcement of strict cybercrime regulations governing the circulation of images and videos linked to security incidents. Under local legislation, sharing images, footage, or information connected to military activity or conflict can lead to significant penalties, including fines of up to $54,000 and prison sentences beginning at 2 years.
Radha Stirling, founder of Detained in Dubai, warned that the scope of these laws is broader than many expatriates realise. She stated that even individuals who simply repost existing material online could potentially face charges.

Recent arrests are part of a broader crackdown on the sharing of images and videos linked to recent missile and drone activity affecting the UAE. Authorities have warned residents that circulating such content could be interpreted as spreading misinformation or disturbing public security.
Key Developments
- 21 individuals were taken into custody on suspicion of using an information technology tool to broadcast false news or provocative propaganda
- 35 individuals were shown in mugshots released by authorities accused of cyber-related offences
- 25 more individuals were detained on Sunday, including 12 people accused of distributing images or footage linked to the missile and drone incidents
Detained in Dubai has urged governments representing the detained individuals to raise the matter with UAE authorities. The organisation argues that the residents should have been treated as victims of the explosion rather than suspects.
