KitKat Heist: 12 Tons of Candy Bars Stolen in Italy

Nestlé, the Swiss food giant headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland, reported that around 12 tons of KitKat bars, equivalent to approximately 413,793 individual bars, have gone missing after leaving its production facility in Italy en route to Poland this week. The vehicle carrying the KitKat cargo remains missing, with both the vehicle and its contents unaccounted for.

The shipment of KitKat bars, made of chocolate-covered wafer, was destined for distribution across Europe. The theft occurred while the bars were being transported between production and distribution sites last week. As a result, the missing candy bars could potentially enter unofficial sales channels across European markets, according to a spokesperson for Nestlé.

In a surprising move, Domino's Pizza UK announced on social media that it would be introducing a new chocolate-themed pizza, seemingly capitalizing on the missing KitKat shipment. The company's social media post read, "We would like to share our thoughts and condolences with KitKat following their recent sad news. On a completely unrelated note, we're pleased to announce we'll now be selling a new Kit Kat pizza." The post was met with amusement and sarcasm from fans on social media, with some users joking about swapping missing KitKats for Domino's chocolate pizza.

Tracking the Stolen KitKats

Nestlé has warned that the stolen KitKats could appear in unofficial markets across Europe, but the company has implemented a system to track the stolen products. Each bar has a unique batch code assigned to it, allowing consumers, retailers, and wholesalers to identify if a product is part of the stolen shipment by scanning the on-pack batch numbers. If a match is found, the scanner will receive instructions to alert Nestlé, which will handle the evidence.

A Statement from Nestlé

Whilst Nestlé appreciates the humor and attention surrounding the missing KitKat shipment, the company remains serious about the issue of cargo theft. "Whilst we appreciate the criminals' exceptional taste, the fact remains that cargo theft is an escalating issue for businesses of all sizes," a spokesperson for Nestlé stated.
