Personalised Cancer Vaccine for Dog Showcases AI-Powered Medical Innovation

Core Intelligence Technologies, a technology company co-founded by Paul Conyngham, has been at the forefront of a groundbreaking project to develop a personalised cancer vaccine for its founder's dog, Rosie. The project, which leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) tools and collaboration with researchers at the University of New South Wales, has generated significant interest in the scientific and technology communities.

In 2024, Rosie was diagnosed with cancer and underwent chemotherapy and surgery, but her condition continued to deteriorate. Conyngham, an electrical and computing engineer, began exploring unconventional options, including the use of AI to identify alternative treatments. He used the ChatGPT chatbot to outline a potential treatment strategy, which led him to consider an immunotherapy-based approach.

Conyngham then contacted researchers at the University of New South Wales, specifically the Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics, to arrange for Rosie's tumour DNA to be sequenced. With the sequencing data available, he began analysing the information himself to identify potential treatment pathways.

The project gained momentum after the involvement of Pall Thordarson, a scientist known for his work in nanomedicine. Using the genomic data gathered by Conyngham, Thordarson and colleagues developed a tailored messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine designed specifically for Rosie's cancer. The vaccine was created in less than two months.

Rosie received the first injection of the experimental vaccine in December and a booster dose in February. Since beginning the treatment, most of her tumours have significantly reduced in size, and her overall condition has improved.

The success of this project has sparked discussion within the technology sector about the potential role of AI in accelerating medical innovation. The story has highlighted the potential for democratizing the development of cancer vaccines and has raised hopes for the application of this technology to human cancer treatment.
