Chinese Woman Creates 3D Chocolate Miniature of Famous Painting

A Chinese woman has gone viral after creating a 3D miniature version of the famous painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" using 60 kg of chocolate. The video showcasing the chocolate recreation of ancient Bianjing city, posted by blogger Fan Sumu in late May, has gained around one million likes, according to Jimu News.

The masterpiece, painted by Zhang Zeduan during the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127), is one of the most well-known works in Chinese history. The 25.5 cm by 5.2 m handscroll is widely admired for its lively and detailed representation of daily life and landscape along the Bian River in Bianjing, the ancient capital city.

Fan used a combination of chocolate, fondant, and rice paper to replicate the painting. She initially created a small chocolate replica of part of the artwork last year, then dedicated three months this year to completing the full version. The final product measures 1.22 m in width and seven metres in length, featuring 176 houses, 281 trees, more than 20 boats, and 816 people.

The level of detail in Fan's work is impressive, with each house measuring about 10-20cm tall and the human figures standing at only 2cm tall. The smallest window is less than 1cm wide, while ropes used by farmers to pull a cart are as thin as hair. Fan learned the required skills through online videos and has been creating chocolate miniature models of famous structures and paintings for several years.

Fan's background is in international trade, and she has never taken any formal fine arts classes. However, she has a passion for recreating traditional Chinese architecture, which she plans to continue. "I will do more research on this aspect and explore how to let more people understand traditional architecture," she said.

Fan's work has caught the attention of internet users, with one commenting, "I would like to mini-size myself to play around in the chocolate world she creates." Another user said, "She is brilliant. She should apply for a world record."
