Traffic Disruption for VIP Convoy Sparks Outrage in Bengaluru

A dramatic sit-in protest unfolded on Old Airport Road in Bengaluru on Sunday evening after a pregnant woman was left stranded in a traffic jam caused by the Karnataka Governor's convoy. The incident highlighted the ongoing debate over the balance between security protocols for high-profile individuals and the daily realities of heavily congested urban roads.

The traffic police halted vehicles for nearly 30 minutes to clear a route for the motorcade, leading to severe congestion on an already bottlenecked stretch of Old Airport Road near the ISRO Junction. The construction of an underpass on this stretch had already put pressure on the road, making it a congested corridor.

As the disruption worsened, a Bengaluru commuter staged a protest by sitting in the middle of the road, confronting traffic personnel. He repeatedly told officers that his pregnant wife was stranded and questioned why ordinary citizens were being inconvenienced for VIP movement. Despite police urging him to clear the way, he refused to move.

The visuals of the protest were widely shared on social media, sparking outrage over the "insensitive" traffic blocks in a city already struggling with congestion. Social media users expressed anger over the disruption, calling for structural changes and alternative arrangements such as helicopter travel for dignitaries to avoid city disruptions.

Former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai amplified the issue by sharing the viral video on X and calling for a review of traffic stoppages for VIP movement. He urged authorities to reconsider prolonged halts and criticised police behavior, writing that "citizens should be treated with respect" and not inconvenienced unnecessarily.

The incident has rekindled a recurring debate in Bengaluru and other metros: how to balance security protocols for high-profile individuals with the daily realities of heavily congested urban roads. Over the last couple of months, public anger over the difficulties they face due to VIP convoys have been spilling over both on the roads and on social media.

The Karnataka Governor's convoy was not the first instance of a VIP movement causing disruption in Bengaluru. In recent months, public anger over the difficulties they face due to VIP convoys have been spilling over both on the roads and on social media. The most notable incident was in Mumbai, where a woman confronted Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan and demanded politicians use open grounds rather than blocking busy streets.

The episode has sparked a wider debate on urban traffic governance and VIP privilege, with many calling for structural changes and a review of traffic stoppages for VIP movement. As the city struggles with congestion, the delicate balance between security protocols and daily realities of urban roads will continue to be a pressing issue.
