Pakistan's President Zardari: A Legacy of Allegations and Corruption

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has been associated with the nickname "Mr 10%" since the 1990s, a time when he first came into prominence during the political rise of his wife, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Although he didn't have a prominent official position at the time, Zardari was regarded by many as having considerable power behind the scenes.

Allegations of corruption began to arise around this time, with many accusing Zardari of accepting commissions on government contracts and significant transactions. The notion of a "10% cut" quickly gained popularity and turned into a catchphrase used by his detractors. These accusations eventually turned into formal cases, with Zardari being named in multiple corruption investigations, both within Pakistan and abroad.

The cases were linked to alleged kickbacks and money laundering tied to deals from the 1990s. Zardari spent several years in jail between the late 1990s and early 2000s as these cases moved through the system. In one of the more high-profile cases, he was convicted by a lower court over alleged kickbacks, but that conviction was later overturned. Many other cases either didn't hold up, were dropped, or remained unresolved, often due to a lack of evidence or prolonged legal proceedings.

Despite the lack of concrete evidence, the nickname "Mr 10%" never really disappeared. It continued to be used by opponents and commentators over the years, regardless of how the cases ultimately played out. The nickname has become an enduring part of Pakistan's political conversation, and it still shows up today.

The legacy of corruption allegations surrounding Zardari is still evident in popular culture. In the film Dhurandhar: The Revenge, a character widely seen as being inspired by Zardari is referred to as "10% Zarwari", a clear reference to a label that has stuck for decades.
