Apple CEO Tim Cook Shares Insights on Leadership Transition

Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed the advice he received from late co-founder Steve Jobs, which shaped the company's leadership transition and his approach to the role. Speaking in a recent interview, Cook disclosed that Jobs instructed him to "never ask what I would do. Just do the right thing."

Jobs' Concerns According to Cook, Jobs had witnessed companies struggle after the exit of a legendary founder, particularly at Disney following the death of Walt Disney. He had seen Disney's leadership stall over debates about what Walt Disney would have done. To prevent Apple from falling into the same trap, Jobs wanted to ensure that Cook would not feel pressured to replicate his leadership style or decision-making instincts.

Structured Handover Cook noted that Apple had never experienced a truly "professional transition" at the CEO level before his appointment. Jobs deliberately chose a more structured handover, offering Cook the CEO role with clear instructions not to govern Apple by second-guessing its founder. This move allowed Cook to focus on being the best version of himself, rather than constantly asking, "What would Steve Jobs do?"
