Amazon Unveils AI-Powered Warehouse Robot
Amazon has unveiled a new artificial intelligence-powered version of its Proteus warehouse robot, a significant step in the company's efforts to automate warehouse operations. The next-generation robot was presented at Amazon's Delivering the Future event in Dartford, near London, and is expected to be introduced in Europe during the first half of 2027.
The upgraded Proteus can understand and respond to human language, marking a departure from earlier warehouse robots that relied on specialized software commands. Workers will be able to instruct the robot using everyday language, while the machine determines task priorities, routes, and timing on its own. The robot is designed to move goods across warehouse floors and assist employees with physically demanding tasks.
Proteus is already operating at 25 Amazon facilities in the United States, primarily in dock areas, transporting carts weighing nearly 400 kilograms. The new model expands those capabilities by allowing movement throughout fulfillment centers and delivery sites. As part of a broader investment program, Amazon is set to introduce the robot in Europe, which is expected to be a key part of the company's efforts to modernize operations, improve delivery speeds, and support future growth across the region.

| Robot | Capabilities | Deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Proteus | Move goods across warehouse floors, assist employees with physically demanding tasks | Europe (first half of 2027) |
| STARK | Handle totes | 15 European sites by 2027 |
| Vulcan | Equipped with a sense of touch | Additional facilities |
Amazon maintains that its robotics program is intended to support workers rather than replace them. The company says machines such as Proteus will take over repetitive and heavy-lifting duties, allowing employees to focus on inventory management, quality control, and other higher-skilled tasks. The launch highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in global logistics, as online retailers seek faster deliveries and greater efficiency.
Investor Takeaway
Amazon's new Proteus robot may improve warehouse efficiency, but its impact on the company's bottom line remains to be seen.
