Air India Cuts International Flights, Suspends Services on Six Overseas Routes
Air India Announces Reduction of International Flights Amid Airspace Curbs and High Jet Fuel Prices
Air India has announced a reduction in international flights and a temporary suspension of services on six routes, effective during the June-August period. The decision comes as a result of a combination of factors, including continued airspace restrictions over certain regions and record high jet fuel prices for international operations.
The loss-making airline has already reduced flights on certain routes, but the latest announced rationalization of services will further impact the commercial viability of planned services. Air India will be temporarily suspending services on six routes, including Delhi-Chicago, Mumbai-New York, Delhi-Shanghai, Chennai-Singapore, Mumbai-Dhaka, and Delhi-Male, until August.
Despite the reduction in services, Air India will continue to operate a significant number of international flights every month. According to the airline's statement, this includes more than 1,200 flights per month, with distribution across various regions.
| Region | Weekly Flights |
|---|---|
| North America | 33 |
| Europe | 47 |
| UK | 57 |
| Australia | 8 |
| Far East, Southeast Asia, SAARC | 158 |
| Mauritius (Africa) | 7 |
These international flights will be operated weekly, providing essential connectivity to various destinations across the globe. The airline's efforts to adapt to the changing market conditions and optimize its operations will be closely watched by industry analysts and stakeholders.
Investor Takeaway
Air India's decision to cut international flights and suspend services on six routes may impact the airline's commercial viability and potentially affect investor sentiment.
