Bond Yields Edge Higher in India Amid Global Market Volatility

India's benchmark 10-year bond yield rose at the open on May 20, as a weakening rupee and rising oil prices dampened market sentiment. The 10-year bond yield was trading at 7.1369 percent, up from its previous session close of 7.1101 percent.

The current market conditions have led to a significant increase in bond yields, with the 10-year bond yield hovering around a six-week high and on the verge of breaking out to hit its highest level in two years. This trend is largely driven by a surge in global bond yields, which has resulted in a distortion in dollar demand, weighing heavily on emerging markets, including India.

The US 10-year treasury yield has surpassed 4.5 percent, while the 30-year yield has crossed 5.1 percent, its highest level in nearly 19 years. This indicates that investors are pricing in a more stubborn inflation outlook in the US. Additionally, the CME's Fedwatch tool now shows a 47 percent probability of an interest rate hike by December, up from 14 percent last week. Investors are eagerly awaiting the Federal Reserve meeting minutes for fresh clues on the interest rate outlook.

The sharp rise in global oil prices, with Brent crude staying near $111 a barrel, has further contributed to the market volatility. The ongoing talks with Iran have been slow, with both sides reluctant to arrive at a definitive deal, as stated by United States Vice President JD Vance. The rupee has continued its downward trend, opening 33 paise lower on May 20 and reaching a record low.

Investor Takeaway

Investors should be cautious of the rising bond yields and its impact on emerging markets.
