Zee Entertainment Shares Surge 7% on Securing Broadcasting Rights for 2026 FIFA World Cup in India
Zee Entertainment Limited (ZEEL) Secures FIFA World Cup Broadcasting Rights
Shares of Zee Entertainment Limited (ZEEL) rose 7% in intraday trading on Monday, 1 June, following the company's announcement of a partnership with FIFA to broadcast the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India. This surge marks the fifth consecutive trading session of growth for Zee shares, which have seen a 20% gain during this period.
The announcement comes just 10 days before the tournament kicks off on June 11 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. According to an exchange filing shared by the company, Zee has partnered with FIFA to bring the world's biggest football properties, including the 2026 and 2030 FIFA World Cup editions, and the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, along with other key FIFA events up to 2034 and docu-series content, for the Indian market.
As part of this partnership, Zee will launch four dedicated sports channels: Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2, and Unite8 Sports 2 HD. The company's digital platform, Zee 5, will provide a live, immersive viewing experience in the viewer's preferred language.

| Broadcasting Rights | Zee Entertainment Limited | Other Bidders |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 FIFA World Cup | ₹30-35 million | $100 million (FIFA demand) |
| 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup | ||
| 2030 FIFA World Cup |
It is worth noting that several media reports had previously pegged the size of the deal at $30-35 million, significantly lower than the $100 million demanded by FIFA for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups. This reduced price may be attributed to the late-night match timings in India, with many matches scheduled to take place early in the morning due to the tournament's location in North America.
Major broadcasting players like JioStar had offered around $20 million for the rights but were rejected by FIFA. There were also reports that Doordarshan could broadcast the FIFA World Cup 2026, but the broadcasters pulled out of securing commercial rights.
The partnership with FIFA is expected to unlock the immense untapped potential of football in India, with the company's CEO, Punit Goenka, commenting, "We are excited to bring one of the world's biggest sporting spectacles to Indian audiences. Football cuts across regions and demographics, and the investments in garnering the media rights and launching dedicated sports channels, reflect our clear belief in its long-term potential."
