WhatsApp Explores Custom Status Visibility Options for Enhanced User Control
WhatsApp Rolls Out New "Status Lists" Feature to Enhance User Control
Meta-owned WhatsApp is working on a new feature that could significantly change how users share status updates on the platform. According to reports from beta tracking platforms, the company is developing "Status lists," a tool that would allow users to create custom groups for sharing updates with selected contacts rather than broadcasting them to everyone.
Currently, WhatsApp offers only a few basic privacy options for status updates. Users can choose to share with all contacts, exclude certain people, or manually pick individuals through the "Only share with" setting. While functional, these options can feel limited, especially for users who want more nuanced control over different social circles.
The proposed Status lists feature aims to address this issue by allowing users to create multiple customized groups, such as close friends, family, or colleagues, and decide which list sees each update. This idea closely mirrors Instagram's "Close Friends" feature, reflecting a broader trend where Meta is aligning features across its apps.

Over the past year or so, WhatsApp has been quietly reshaping what its Status feature can do. It's no longer just about posting a quick text or photo. Users now have access to features like music stickers, collages, longer videos, and interactive prompts that make updates feel a lot more like something you'd see on a social platform.
At the same time, there's been a clear push on privacy. WhatsApp has been adding stronger chat protections and even exploring features like usernames, which could eventually mean users don't have to share their phone number as freely as they do today.
The idea of Status lists fits neatly into all of this. It brings together two things people care about more than ever, expression and control. Users get to share more, but also decide exactly who gets to see it.
| Feature | WhatsApp's Current Status | Proposed Status Lists |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing options | Limited to all contacts, exclude certain people, or manually pick individuals | Create custom groups for sharing updates with selected contacts |
| Customization | No option to create multiple customized groups | Create multiple customized groups, such as close friends, family, or colleagues |

It's still early, and the feature has only been spotted in development. WhatsApp tends to test things for a while before rolling them out widely. Some features change along the way, and some never make it at all. However, when a feature like this shows up in beta, it usually points to a direction the company is seriously exploring.
If it does launch, it could change how people use Status quite a bit. Instead of feeling like they're posting something for everyone, it becomes more personal, more intentional. Users might share one update with close friends, another with family, and something else more broadly, without overthinking it.
On a platform used by billions, even small tweaks can shift behavior in a big way. And as WhatsApp keeps adding more social-style features, it's becoming clear that it's no longer just a messaging app. It's slowly turning into something more layered, where how you share is just as important as what you share.
