Vodafone Idea Seeks Rs 35,000-Crore Debt Funding Package
Vodafone Idea, India's third-largest telecom operator, is in advanced talks with a State Bank of India-led consortium to secure a Rs 35,000-crore debt funding package. The company's CEO, Abhijit Kishore, announced the development during the company's fourth-quarter earnings call on Monday. The debt package, which includes a funded facility of Rs 25,000 crore and a non-funded facility of Rs 10,000 crore, is aimed at supporting Vodafone Idea's aggressive network expansion and capital expenditure plans over the next three years.
The company plans to invest Rs 45,000 crore in network expansion and capital expenditure over the next three years, with the debt package expected to support a significant portion of this investment. Vodafone Idea's CEO expressed confidence in meeting the company's financial obligations over the next three years through a mix of higher EBITDA, debt funding, promoter infusion, and tax refunds.
The company has been expanding its network coverage and capacity across key circles such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Kerala, where it has seen improvement in customer acquisition, retention, and subscriber quality. Vodafone Idea's board recently approved a Rs 4,730-crore fundraise through the issuance of up to 430 crore warrants to Suryaja Investments Pte. Ltd., an Aditya Birla Group promoter entity, to strengthen the company's financial position.

The company's subscriber growth strategy is centered on expanding network coverage, reducing customer churn, and targeting higher-quality subscriber additions. Vodafone Idea plans to add another 60,000-70,000 4G sites over the next 18 months, expanding population coverage and strengthening its presence in the mobile number portability market.
