US Immigration Lawyer Finds Delhi Traffic to be a Significant Challenge
Delhi's Traffic and Pedestrian Challenges Reflect City's Massive Population
Delhi, the second most populated city in the world with a population of 33.8 million, continues to face significant traffic and pedestrian challenges. US-based immigration attorney Daniel Larson recently shared his experience of navigating the city's diplomatic enclave, describing the traffic as "insane" and finding it hard to walk around.
The area Larson was staying in, home to embassies and government offices, is actually considered one of the calmer zones in Delhi. However, locals pointed out that the city's massive population and dense urban pressures make congestion inevitable. Delhi's population size, coupled with its rapid growth, has positioned it among the world's top 20 most populated cities, alongside Mumbai and Kolkata.
Delhi's infrastructure and mobility systems are struggling to keep up with the city's population growth. According to the United Nations World Urbanisation Prospects, published in 2024, India is now the world's most populous nation, with its major cities expanding at a staggering pace. The city's size and density make traffic and pedestrian challenges unavoidable, with some locals even suggesting that the best place to go for a walk is on a treadmill.
Despite these challenges, Delhi has some green and pedestrian-friendly spaces, such as Nehru Park and Lodhi Garden, which are considered unmatched even by many American cities. These spaces may offer a walkable environment for visitors like Larson. However, the city's population context makes traffic and pedestrian challenges a persistent issue.
