US Retail Gasoline and Diesel Prices Hit Record Highs Ahead of Summer Travel
Retail gasoline and diesel prices in the US have reached their highest seasonal levels ever, posing a significant challenge for consumers planning their summer travel. Although fuel costs have decreased slightly in recent days, retail prices remain elevated. According to the American Automobile Association, the national average gasoline price stood at $4.12 a gallon on Monday, a record for this time of year.
This current average surpasses the previous high of $4.07 on the same day in 2022, which was driven by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Diesel prices, meanwhile, have also reached a record high, with a national average of $5.65 a gallon, exceeding their previous peak for this time of year by more than 60 cents.
The ongoing war in Iran has severely impacted global oil supplies, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that accounts for nearly a quarter of the world's seaborne oil. This disruption has led to a significant increase in crude oil prices, contributing to the largest jump in US inflation in nearly four years. The resulting surge in gasoline and diesel prices is having a ripple effect on airfares, food costs, and transportation expenses.

The US Energy Secretary has forecast that gasoline prices will remain elevated for "a few more weeks," echoing a projection from the US Energy Information Administration. According to this forecast, retail gasoline prices are expected to average $4.16 a gallon in the second quarter if the conflict ends in April, before easing to an average of $3.55 by the fourth quarter.
