Mysterious Aircraft Spotted Near Area 51 Triggers Speculation About F-47 Fighter Programme
A newly surfaced video showing an unidentified aircraft making sharp turns near the highly classified Area 51 test range in Nevada has sparked widespread speculation that it could be linked to the United States Air Force's next generation F-47 fighter programme. The footage, captured using thermal imaging equipment, shows a triangular aircraft operating in restricted airspace, although no official confirmation of its identity has been issued.
The video emerged this week after aviation enthusiasts and researchers shared footage recorded near Groom Lake, the secretive military facility commonly known as Area 51. Analysts noted that the aircraft's shape appears similar to concepts associated with the US Air Force's Next Generation Air Dominance programme, under which Boeing was selected to develop the F-47 fighter.
Reports from aviation publication The Aviationist said the footage was provided by researcher Anders Otteson, who previously recorded images of a triangular or "Dorito-shaped" aircraft in the same area earlier this year. The publication reported that the authenticity of the new footage had been verified with the individual who captured it, although the aircraft itself remains unidentified.

Military aviation experts have urged caution, noting that Area 51 has long been used to test advanced aircraft and classified technologies. While some features visible in the thermal imagery resemble publicly released renderings of the F-47, specialists say it is impossible to determine the aircraft's exact type from the available footage alone.
| Programme | Expected Generation | Manufacturer |
|---|---|---|
| F-47 | Sixth Generation | Boeing |
The F-47 is expected to become the US Air Force's sixth generation fighter aircraft. Boeing secured the programme in 2025, and US officials have previously indicated that experimental aircraft linked to the project have been flying in secret for several years. Production work on the first aircraft is reportedly underway, although many details remain classified.
Area 51 has a long history of hosting secret aircraft development projects, including the U-2 spy plane and other advanced military programmes. Its secrecy has also made it a frequent source of public speculation and conspiracy theories.

The sighting has renewed interest in Area 51 after similar reports of a triangular aircraft emerged earlier this year. While aviation observers have linked the aircraft's appearance to advanced US military development programmes, neither the US Air Force nor Boeing has confirmed any connection to the F-47 fighter, leaving the aircraft's identity unverified.
