Tata Steel UK Commences Assessment Following Port Talbot Fire, Hot Strip Mill Restart Scheduled for Next Week
Tata Steel UK Works to Assess Damage After Pickle Line Fire
Tata Steel UK reported on Friday that work is underway to conduct a full assessment of the area affected by a fire at the Pickle Line on 3 June. The incident led to the temporary shutdown of the Hot Strip Mill. The company has stated that teams are working towards a planned restart in the middle of the coming week.
In a statement, Tata Steel UK noted that the supply chain teams are actively implementing mitigation plans, including alternative processing at the Llanwern Cold Mill and Pickle Line. The company emphasized that the incident is unrelated to the safe and successful demolition of an empty, redundant Gas Holder earlier on 3 June.
On Wednesday, a fire broke out at the UK plant, which is undergoing a transition to a low-carbon steel-making process. Tata Steel UK reported that all personnel were accounted for and evacuated from the area safely. The Mid and West Wales Fire Service attended the Port Talbot site at around 8 pm (UK time) to deal with the fire.

According to Tata Steel UK, emergency services are working with local teams to completely extinguish the fire. The company stated that further updates will be shared as information becomes available. In October 2024, Tata Steel stopped iron-making at its Port Talbot site and temporarily paused steel manufacturing, pending the construction of a 3.2 MTPA electric arc furnace.
The fire has caused "substantial damage" to a vital production line, according to the Unite workers' union. General Secretary Sharon Graham confirmed that no one was injured in the fire after workers were evacuated safely. Graham added that measures must be put in place to protect jobs both at Tata and down the supply chain during any period of disruption.
