Tata Electronics Surpasses Foxconn in India, Becomes Apple's Largest Contract Manufacturing Partner
Tata Electronics has expanded its workforce to approximately 75,000 employees, surpassing Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn in India and becoming Apple's largest contract manufacturing partner in the country by headcount, according to a report by The Economic Times on Thursday.
The rapid expansion, which has seen the company grow from nearly 15,000 employees in 2023, has been largely driven by the company's 500-acre facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. This facility is critical in scaling up production to meet rising global demand for Apple iPhones. The company's aggressive hiring spree has been aimed at achieving the scale required for global contract manufacturing, meeting Apple's strict operational benchmarks, and handling surging demand.
Tata Electronics' workforce of around 75,000 spans its Hosur operations as well as recently acquired Pegatron and Wistron facilities. While the company has temporarily overtaken Foxconn in India in terms of headcount, Foxconn is expected to regain the top position once its Devanahalli facility ramps up later this year.

The milestone is significant, given that Tata Electronics began operations only in 2020. Industry experts highlight the emergence of Indian firms as serious contenders in global electronics manufacturing.
| Company | 2023 Headcount | Current Headcount |
|---|---|---|
| Tata Electronics | 15,000 | 75,000 |
| Foxconn | 70,000 | 60,000 |
Industry experts note that Tata Electronics has reached the critical mass needed to credibly transition toward higher-value segments of the supply chain. Prabhu Ram, vice president at CyberMedia Research, said, "With 75,000 employees supporting its rapidly expanding EMS operations, Tata Electronics has reached the critical mass needed to credibly transition toward higher-value segments of the supply chain."
Tata Electronics is still in the early stages of a sector long dominated by Taiwanese, Korean, and Chinese manufacturers. The company must now move beyond assembly-scale operations and focus on deeper localisation, stronger supply chain resilience, and improved quality and yield management.

The expansion comes amid Apple's growing push into India. Earlier, The Economic Times reported that Apple's iPhone became the most valuable export from India in 2025, with shipments worth around $23 billion, largely to the US. Apple's growing India presence has been supported by the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and its increasing reliance on Indian manufacturers, including Tata Group companies, as it reduces dependence on China.
Investor Takeaway
Investors should consider Tata Electronics as a potential beneficiary of the growing demand for Apple iPhones.
