Sun TV Stock Takes 8% Hit, Falls to Top of Mid-Cap Losers Amid TVK Gains in Tamil Nadu
Sun TV Network Shares Plummet 8% Amid Electoral Upset for DMK
Shares of Sun TV Network, a business entity closely affiliated with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, fell 8% on May 4 to emerge as the top mid-cap loser. The decline comes as the DMK trails behind its competitors in the recently concluded Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu.
As of May 2026, Sun TV Network, founded by Kalanithi Maran, has maintained a close association with the DMK party due to the Maran brothers' familial ties to the late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi. The stock recorded its sharpest single-day fall since August 2024, when shares of Sun TV Network were trading 8% lower at Rs 557.65 apiece at 10:40 am on May 4.
The DMK's poor performance in the polls comes as a significant setback, as the party was expected to maintain its lead based on various exit polls. However, the current trends indicate that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician Vijay, is surging ahead of its Dravidian rivals, including the ruling DMK and the AIADMK.

According to the Election Commission (EC) data, TVK is leading in as many as 98 constituencies, followed by the AIADMK in 74 seats, and the DMK in 61. The DMK's struggles to catch up are evident, with 15 cabinet ministers, including Chief Minister M K Stalin, trailing behind their competitors.
Stalin's performance is particularly noteworthy, as he is trailing behind TVK's VS Babu by 1234 votes in the Kolathur segment. Additionally, his son and deputy CM Udhayanidhi is behind in his incumbent Chepauk-Tirvuvallikeni seat. Vijay is ahead in Tiruchirappalli East by over 3,000 votes at the end of two rounds of counting.

The DMK's poor show could be attributed to various factors, including the implementation of populist measures by Chief Minister M K Stalin, which may have failed to resonate with the voters. The outcome of the polls will be closely watched, as it has the potential to upset the existing electoral dynamics in Tamil Nadu.
