StrainX Bioworks Emerges from Stealth Mode with $13 Million Funding Round
StrainX Bioworks, a synthetic biology startup, has secured $13 million in a funding round led by Prime Venture Partners and Leo Capital. This significant investment marks the company's first institutional round, following initial operations through bootstrap capital and investments from individual backers.
The funding round also saw participation from Good Startup, Sparro Capital, Sun Icon Ventures, Dhoka Ventures, and WTF (India) Delhi Angels. The fresh capital will be used to expand StrainX's research and development capabilities, scale fermentation infrastructure, grow engineering and scientific teams, and accelerate commercialization efforts globally. The company is also looking to deepen partnerships with global food and ingredient companies as it scales production.
Founded by IIT Delhi alumni Akshay Mittal and Dr. Alok Malviya, StrainX operates in the synthetic biology and precision fermentation space, where microorganisms are engineered to produce molecules and proteins in industrial fermentation systems. The company has spent the past two years building capabilities across strain engineering, fermentation, process scale-up, and product development while operating in stealth mode.

Synthetic biology involves engineering microbes to produce molecules that are traditionally sourced from plants or animals. These microorganisms are then scaled in industrial fermentation systems to manufacture proteins and ingredients in controlled factory environments. While such technologies have historically been used in pharmaceuticals, companies are increasingly exploring their use in food, nutrition, and consumer products as manufacturing costs decline.
India is well-positioned to emerge as a major hub for fermentation-led manufacturing due to its legacy expertise in the pharmaceutical sector. StrainX has already demonstrated fermentation at the 10,000-litre scale and is now focused on scaling production further as it prepares for commercialization in India and overseas markets, including the US.
