Indian Stock Markets to Observe Holiday-Shortened Week
The Indian stock markets are preparing for a holiday-shortened week, with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) set to remain closed on Tuesday, April 14, due to Dr BR Ambedkar Jayanti. This marks the third time this year that markets have been shut due to holidays, following Good Friday and Mahavir Jayanti.
In total, there are 16 stock market holidays scheduled for 2026, with six already observed. After the upcoming closure, trading will be suspended on nine more occasions during the rest of the year. The next market holidays will fall on Maharashtra Day (May 1) and Eid al-Adha (May 28).
In the second half of the year, markets will remain closed on Muharram (June 26), Ganesh Chaturthi (September 14), and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2). These will be followed by Dussehra (October 20), Diwali Balipratipada (November 10), and Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 24). The final market holiday of the year will be Christmas on December 25.

Among commodity exchanges, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India will remain closed during the morning session on Ambedkar Jayanti but will resume trading in the evening session. The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange will remain shut for both morning and evening sessions on the day.
In 2026, four holidays fall on weekends and will not impact trading. These include Maha Shivaratri (February 15) and Eid al-Fitr (March 21), which have already passed, along with Independence Day (August 15) and Diwali (November 8). Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on a Sunday this year, with exchanges set to hold the customary Muhurat Trading session on November 8. The timings for the one-hour session will be announced closer to the date. Independence Day, meanwhile, falls on a Saturday.
