Southwest Airlines Expands in India with Launch of Global Innovation Centre in Hyderabad
US airline giant Southwest Airlines has marked a significant milestone in its expansion plans in India with the launch of its first India Global Innovation Centre (GIC) in Hyderabad on May 20. This move underscores the city's growing reputation as a hub for advanced engineering and innovation, with a growing list of multinational firms establishing their technology and engineering footprint in the country through global capability centres (GCCs).
The centre is designed to scale to accommodate more than 1,000 employees over time, with teams focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), data science, analytics, cybersecurity, digital engineering, and next-generation product development. The facility, which was inaugurated by Telangana IT and Industries minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu, will house technology, engineering, and enterprise teams supporting the airline's global operations.
Southwest Airlines has established the centre through its wholly owned subsidiary, Southwest Airlines India Private Limited. The company's Executive Vice President & Chief Information Officer, Lauren Woods, emphasized the importance of the centre in advancing the airline's vision to build critical business and technology skills. Hyderabad's strong talent pool in analytics, engineering, and innovation made it an ideal location for the next phase of the company's journey.

Hyderabad's emergence as a strategic centre for aviation, space-tech, defence, and deep-tech has been reinforced by the presence of prestigious institutions such as DRDO, RCI, and DMRL. The city's growing reputation as a hub for advanced engineering and innovation has attracted several global enterprises, with over 450 GCCs employing more than 1.35 lakh professionals across sectors including technology, healthcare, aerospace, mobility, and semiconductors.

The Telangana government has welcomed Southwest Airlines' investment in the city, with Sai Krishna, IT Advisor to the Government of Telangana, meeting with senior leadership representatives to discuss the company's long-term growth plans in Hyderabad and Telangana's expanding role as a global hub for travel, hospitality, aviation technology, and enterprise innovation.
