South Korean Funeral Firm Faces $33 Million Loss from Leveraged Ethereum ETF Investment
South Korean Funeral Services Provider Suffers $33 Million Loss in High-Risk Cryptocurrency Investment
Bumo Sarang, South Korea's seventh-largest funeral service provider, has reportedly incurred losses of around $33 million after investing customer prepaid funds into a leveraged cryptocurrency exchange-traded fund tied to Ethereum-related assets. The company allegedly placed nearly $40 million in customer funds into the T-REX 2X Long BMNR Daily Target ETF, a high-risk financial product designed to deliver twice the daily performance of Bitmine, an Ethereum treasury firm.
According to reports, the investment has since fallen in value to roughly $10 million, resulting in significant paper losses as cryptocurrency markets weakened. This decline is attributed to the 28% drop in Ethereum's value this year, as well as the 34% decline in Bitmine shares. The ETF's 2x leverage has amplified the impact of daily market swings on the investment position.
South Korea's funeral industry is overseen by the country's Fair Trade Commission rather than financial regulators. Current rules require funeral companies to keep only 50% of prepaid customer funds in reserve, while the remaining half can legally be invested without regulatory restrictions. Industry data indicates that nearly 43% of funeral service providers in South Korea currently hold assets below the level of customer advance payments they are expected to safeguard.

In response to the losses, Bumo Sarang described the decline as a "short-term unrealized loss due to global market volatility." However, the company's loss of over 80% is equivalent to eight times its annual revenue. The loss is also significant, totaling 59.5 billion won in a leveraged BMNR ETF, which has decreased in value to just 10.2 billion won as of the end of last year.
| Company | Initial Investment | Current Value | Loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bumo Sarang | $40 million | $10 million | $30 million |
The irony of the situation has not gone unnoticed, with netizens taking to social media to share their reactions. As one user noted, "Can't spell 'death' without ETH." Another user joked, "Rest in peace."
