
RBI Reports 98.47 Percent of Rs 2000 Banknotes Returned
Reserve Bank Sees Significant Decline in Circulation of Rs 2000 Banknotes
The Reserve Bank announced a significant decline in the circulation of Rs 2000 banknotes, citing a substantial return of the currency. According to the central bank, 98.47 per cent of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation have been returned.
The withdrawal of Rs 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation was announced on May 19, 2023. At the close of business on the same day, the total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore. However, as of April 30, 2026, the total value has declined to Rs 5,451 crore.
This decline is a direct result of the various facilities made available by the Reserve Bank for exchanging and depositing Rs 2000 banknotes. Since May 19, 2023, a facility for exchanging these banknotes has been available at the 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank. Additionally, from October 9, 2023, the RBI issue offices have accepted Rs 2000 banknotes from individuals and entities for deposit into their bank accounts.

Furthermore, members of the public have been able to send Rs 2000 banknotes through India Post from any post office within the country to any of the RBI issue offices for credit to their bank accounts.
