Bank Holidays on April 15, 2026: Multiple Festivals and Observances Lead to Closures

As the country celebrates various regional festivals and observances, some states will observe bank holidays on April 15, 2026. A day after the bank closure on account of Ambedkar Jayanti, select cities will remain shut due to festivals like Pohela Boishakh, Bohag Bihu, Vishu, and Himachal Day.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that both public and private sector banks will remain closed on this day. This means that branches of prominent banks such as SBI and HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Punjab National Bank, and Axis Bank will remain shut in the cities mentioned in the RBI holiday calendar.

The closures will be observed in cities like Agartala, Belapur, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, Ranchi, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vijayawada.

Classification of Bank Holidays

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) categorises bank holidays into three types: those under the Negotiable Instruments Act, RTGS holidays, and bank account closing days.

It is essential to note that bank holidays are not uniform nationwide. Instead, they vary depending on state-specific festivals and observances. However, banks remain shut across India on national holidays like Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti.

Weekend Bank Closures

Banks follow a standard schedule on weekends: they are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, while remaining open on the first, third, and (if applicable) fifth Saturdays. Sundays are non-working days for all banks without exception.

The closure of banks on Saturdays falls under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which governs instruments such as cheques and promissory notes.

Banking Services During Holidays

Even when physical branches are closed, customers can still access most banking services. Digital banking platforms continue to function as usual, and ATMs remain operational 24/7. However, services that require a branch visit, such as passbook updates, will not be available until banks reopen.
