Pentagon Official: No Chance of Resuming Negotiations with Anthropic PBC

Anthropic PBC, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence (AI) company, faces a low probability of resuming negotiations with the Pentagon regarding the military use of its AI tools. The company had previously filed a lawsuit challenging the Pentagon's decision to declare it a supply-chain risk, which would bar it from government contracts.

Emil Michael, the under secretary of defense for research and engineering, stated that Anthropic's lawsuit was an expected reaction to the Pentagon's decision. He emphasized that the company's attempt to reverse the supply-chain declaration would not alter the Pentagon's decision. Michael's remarks come after Anthropic sued to block the Pentagon and other agencies from declaring it a threat to the US supply chain and barring it from government contracts.

The Pentagon's decision to declare Anthropic a supply-chain risk was made after Anthropic demanded assurances that its AI wouldn't be used for mass surveillance of Americans or autonomous weapons deployment. This move put at risk a $200 million contract for Anthropic to provide the Pentagon with classified AI tools. The decision could also preclude Anthropic from partnering with other companies on their military work.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and President Donald Trump have outlined a six-month period for the military and US agencies to shift from Anthropic to other AI providers. Anthropic has expressed concern that the government's actions have already impacted its work with other federal contractors. The company has rejected the characterization that it wants input on the chain of command or operational control and has insisted that all military decisions rest with the Pentagon.

Emil Michael stated that the talks are over and that the Pentagon is moving forward with other AI providers.

Investor Takeaway

Investors should be cautious of potential regulatory risks and their impact on AI-related stocks.
