Investor Ownership of NSE-Listed Companies Hits Five-Year Low
The individual direct ownership of companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) plummeted to a five-year low of 9.1% in the fourth quarter of the previous fiscal year (FY26). This decline was largely attributed to lower participation in the market, volatile market conditions, and a significant equity sell-off, marking the first in seven years.
According to exchange data and analysts' assessments, the growing accessibility of the market through mutual funds has also contributed to this trend. This shift in investor behavior has resulted in a substantial decrease in direct ownership, with only 9.1% of NSE-listed companies being held directly by individual investors in the fourth quarter of FY26.
