Nepal Seeks Deeper Engagement with India, Focusing on Development and Shared Prosperity
The government of Nepal has signaled a major push to deepen its engagement with India, with Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal describing India as a fast-growing technological and economic powerhouse. In a three-day visit to India, Khanal emphasized that Nepal's new leadership seeks to build its relationship with New Delhi around development, connectivity, and shared prosperity, rather than geopolitical tensions.
Khanal's remarks come amid heightened attention on bilateral ties following recent comments by Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah on boundary issues. The Nepalese foreign minister stressed that Kathmandu remains committed to resolving all outstanding issues through dialogue and diplomacy. He noted that Nepal's political leadership is seeking to redefine bilateral ties by moving beyond what he called outdated geopolitical thinking.

Describing the relationship between the two countries as deeper than politics, Khanal invoked their shared civilisational heritage. He noted that Nepal and India are the children of the same rivers, the same mountains, and the same ancient wisdom. The minister thanked India for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation during the visit and underscored the role of the media in shaping public understanding of bilateral relations.
