Musk and Altman Criticized for Social Media Disruptions in OpenAI Trial
Judge Orders Elon Musk and OpenAI Executives to Refrain from Social Media Posts
A high-profile court case between Elon Musk and OpenAI has taken a turn, with the judge overseeing the case urging the tech executives involved to exercise restraint on social media. US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers made the request on Tuesday, a day after Elon Musk, the world's richest person, targeted OpenAI's leadership on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Ahead of opening statements on Tuesday, Judge Gonzalez Rogers cautioned Musk and his counterparts at OpenAI to "control your propensity to use social media to make things worse outside this courtroom." The judge's warning comes as the jury is set to hear from a parade of VIP witnesses and review years-old emails, text messages, and corporate documents from OpenAI's founders. The documents are expected to reveal whether OpenAI's leaders betrayed the company's founding principles by converting to a for-profit entity and accepting billions in investment from Microsoft Corp.
On Monday, Musk appeared to amplify a post from Ronan Farrow about The New Yorker reporter's investigation into OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman. Musk also criticized OpenAI's leadership, referring to the CEO as "Scam Altman." However, in court on Tuesday, Musk claimed that he was responding to public statements made by OpenAI's leadership.

In an effort to move forward, Judge Gonzalez Rogers proposed a "clean slate" for the parties involved, suggesting that they begin anew on Tuesday. Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and president Greg Brockman all agreed to do so, signaling a possible shift in the tone of the case.
