Microsoft's Ambitious Push into India's AI Market

Microsoft's largest data center in India is on track to open by mid-2026, as the tech giant continues to invest heavily in one of the world's largest markets for artificial intelligence services. According to Puneet Chandok, president of Microsoft India and South Asia, the company is seeing "massive demand" for its Azure cloud services and the $30-a-month Copilot 365 AI assistant in the country.

India's vast internet user base, with over 1 billion users, and deep tech talent make it a potentially profitable market for AI, a crucial area of focus for Microsoft as it looks to prove to investors that its massive bet on AI will pay off. To tap into this market, Microsoft has announced significant investments, including a $17.5 billion outlay in India, its largest in Asia, in addition to the $3 billion pledged at the start of 2025. This includes a new data center in Hyderabad, a southern tech hub where Microsoft already has a significant presence.

The company's data center build-out is progressing quickly, with Chandok stating that Microsoft is "the ones who are bringing this to life quickly, the fastest out of the gates." The increasing capacity will be used to serve its growing customer base for Copilot in India, including IT giants such as Infosys, Cognizant, and Tata Consultancy Services, all of which have about 50,000 licenses each.

Microsoft is also developing several AI features in India, where the company employs more than 22,000 people across cities. However, hiring staff to develop these features is becoming increasingly challenging as demand exceeds supply, leading to a "war for talent." Chandok notes that the challenges in India are similar to those faced globally.
