The US Department of Defense (DoD) had sent a formal notice to Anthropic severing its ties with the company, labeling it a 'supply chain risk'. This move was in response to Anthropic's insistence on safeguards that the DoD deemed too restrictive.
Microsoft's Decision
Microsoft has concluded that Anthropic's products, including Claude, can remain available to its customers (excluding the DoD) through platforms such as M365, GitHub, and Microsoft's AI Foundry. The company will continue to work with Anthropic on non-defense related projects.

Some defense technology companies have asked employees to refrain from using Anthropic's Claude models and migrate to alternatives. However, Microsoft provides its tools to multiple US government agencies, and the DoD extensively uses Microsoft 365 productivity software.
Other Companies Using Anthropic's AI Models
- Amazon, an investor in Anthropic, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
- Palantir's Maven Smart Systems uses multiple prompts and workflows built using Anthropic's Claude code.
Supply-Chain Risk Designation
The Pentagon has slapped a formal supply-chain risk designation on Anthropic, limiting the use of its technology in Pentagon contracts. However, the designation only applies to the use of Claude by customers as a direct part of contracts with the DoD, not all use of Claude by customers who have such contracts. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has stated that the company will challenge the designation in court.
Investor Takeaway
Microsoft will continue to utilize Anthropic's AI technology in non-government-related projects.
