Microsoft Supports Anthropic in Request to Halt Pentagon's Actions Against the AI Startup
Microsoft Challenges Pentagon's Designation of Anthropic as Supply Chain Risk
Microsoft Corporation, a major government contractor, has filed a legal brief in the San Francisco federal court to challenge the Pentagon's designation of Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence company, as a supply chain risk.
The dispute began after Anthropic refused to allow unrestricted military use of its AI model, Claude, citing two ethical red lines: preventing American AI from being used for domestic mass surveillance or starting a war without human control. In response, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth designated Anthropic's AI products as a national security threat, effectively shutting the company out of military work.
Microsoft, which has a significant stake in the outcome, argues that the Pentagon's action is an overreach that may have severe economic effects and is not in the public interest. The company claims that the designation forces government contractors to comply with vague and ill-defined directions that have never been used before against a US company.

Microsoft is seeking a temporary lifting of the designation to allow for a more reasoned discussion. The Pentagon has declined to comment on the matter, citing its policy of not making statements on matters in litigation.
