Meta Rolls Out Incognito Chat on WhatsApp for Private AI Conversations
Meta Platforms Announces Incognito Chat Feature for WhatsApp
Meta Platforms has unveiled a new "Incognito Chat" feature for WhatsApp, allowing users to engage in private conversations with Meta AI without their chats being stored or viewed by the company. The feature, announced on May 13, will be rolled out over the coming months on both WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, as the company seeks to address growing concerns over the privacy of AI interactions.
The Incognito Chat feature is built on WhatsApp's "Private Processing" technology, which creates a secure cloud environment where messages are processed without exposing them to Meta or outside parties. According to Meta, the chats will disappear by default and will not be saved in chat history. This move comes at a time when users are increasingly turning to AI chatbots for sensitive discussions involving finances, health, relationships, and work.
WhatsApp's user base, with over three billion users globally, is likely to become a major testing ground for private AI services. The company's announcement reflects the intensifying competition among major technology companies to make AI tools appear safer and more privacy-focused as regulators and users question how personal data shared with chatbots is collected and used.

The initial rollout of Incognito Chat will support only text conversations, and users will not be able to upload images or use image generation tools inside the feature. Meta also stated that the AI system will include safety controls to refuse harmful or dangerous requests. This differentiates the feature from temporary or incognito modes offered by rivals such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude, as Meta claims even it cannot access the content of chats.
| Company | Temporary Chat Data Retention Period |
|---|---|
| Meta | None |
| OpenAI (ChatGPT) | Limited periods for security or legal reasons |
| Google Gemini | Limited periods for security or legal reasons |
| Anthropic (Claude) | Limited periods for security or legal reasons |
In addition to Incognito Chat, Meta announced plans for another feature called "Side Chat", which will allow users to privately interact with Meta AI alongside ongoing WhatsApp conversations without interrupting the main chat. This feature is expected to be available later this year.
