Mahatransco Completes Babhaleshwar-Kudus 400kV Transmission Line, Strengthening Power Stability in Mumbai Metropolitan Region
The Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (Mahatransco) has announced the completion of the Babhaleshwar-Kudus 400kV transmission line, a project that aims to enhance power supply stability across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This new transmission line, which spans approximately 228 km and features 715 transmission towers, is expected to reduce transmission losses by around 5 MW and significantly improve voltage levels in the region.
Power Supply Efficiency to Improve in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Ahilyanagar Districts
The new transmission line is expected to enhance power supply efficiency in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Ahilyanagar districts, thereby improving the overall management of electricity demand in the fast-growing Mumbai region. The project will enable an additional power transfer capacity of up to 3000 MW, ensuring better management of the rapidly rising electricity demand in the region.

Project Completion Delayed Due to Technical and Administrative Hurdles
Originally approved in 2010 with a target date of 2013, the project faced significant delays due to technical and administrative hurdles. It was finally pushed to completion in March 2026 following expedited governance and coordinated efforts by various state agencies.
Unique Challenges Encountered During Project Implementation
The project encountered unique challenges, including securing special permissions to pass through the vicinity of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at Khodad in Pune district. Other obstacles included forest clearances, right of way constraints, and complex land compensation issues. In certain ecologically sensitive forested areas, materials had to be transported manually.

New Line to De-congest Existing Transmission Corridor and Provide Additional Power Source
The new line is expected to de-congest the existing Padghe-Babhaleshwar transmission corridor and provide a vital additional power source to the Kudus substation. This will further strengthen power stability in the region, ensuring a more reliable and efficient power supply to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
